Abstract

The suspended load carried by the canals and rivers varies at different seasons during the year. The study of the suspended load is also important both for design and subsequent maintenance of channels and canals. The training of choes and rivulets, etc., much depends upon the suspended load carried by these during floods. Density currents in reservoirs are sot up due to density and temperature variations and are required to be investigated. A suspended load density meter for use in situ at various depths of water under flowing and stagnant conditions has been developed. The instrument is based on photoelectric effect which is a light quantum phenomenon. It has been calibrated in the density range 1.00 to 1.05 as during floods the amount of suspended load per litre increase enormously. The effect of different colours of the load suspension has also been studied and correction factors worked out.
