Abstract

This paper reviews the progress made so far in the planning and operation of power systems on a regional basis in India and the steps being taken during the Fourth Plan period to promote the process of co-ordination. The programme for the construction of the inter-State and inter-Regional links during the Fourth Plan period has been outlined. The completion of these links would pave the way for the integrated operation of Regional Grids and development of an All-India Grid. The paper indicates the quantum of benefits that could be realised from the integrated operation of the various Regional Grids by that period and stresses the need for the development of adequate load despatching facilities at the State as well as the Regional levels so as to be able to realise these benefits.
