Abstract

This investigation is concerned with a study of the characteristics of the nappe profiles over a suppressed sharp crested weir with atmospheric, sub-atmospheric and above atmospheric pressures below the nappe, the relationship between the quantity of air required for aeration and discharge of water over the weir, and the discharge characteristics of the weir for various pressure conditions below the nappe. The lower nappe profile plotted from experimental data coincides with U.S.B.R. equations for atmospheric pressure. The air vent sizes calculated by different existing methods were compared with those experimentally determined and a good agreement with Johnson’s method is noticed.
