This paper discusses one method of fault location in transmission and distribution systems, employing an electronic measurement technique. The Standing Wave Method represents an elegant principle governing the behaviour of transmission lines, when the length of the line is comparable to the wave length of an electrical sine wave signal applied to the transmission line. In particular, the transmission line exhibits interesting properties when its length turns out to be an integral multiple of quarter-wave length of the signal. This method has been studied in detail and verified experimentally in the Insulation Laboratory of the Central Power Research Institute and also on actual feeders spared by the Mysore State Electricity Board. Tho results are quite promising and indicate tho feasibility of developing suitable instruments based on this method.
