The Himalayan rocks are young and are undergoing st ress changes. In view of the number of hydroelectrical projects under construction and also in planning, a comprehensive study of the physic-geotechnical properties has been taken up. For the first time on Salal dolomite, an extensive laboratory investigations have been carried out, the properties have been compared vis-a-vis dolomites from other countries. A strength criterion developed earlier has been found to be applicable to all intact dolomites including Salal dolomite. This criterion has been further extended to predict strength of rock mass in situ through rock mass classification. The Salal Dolomite has been classified linking its lithology and geotechnical response.
Rockmass classification, Salal dolomite, shear parameters, strength criterion, stress-strain behaviour, triaxial test.
