An efficient computer package for the design of hydraulic structures enables the designer to explore various options to meet the objectives taking into account latest design algorithms consistent with techno-economic, social and political constraints. Such design packages require decisions on mode of interaction, identification of subsystems, formulation of physical and operational goals for each subsystem, organisation of data transfer needs of each subsystem. The preparations of manuals incorporating operational instructions, theoretical basis of design of each subsystem and other characteristics and capabilities of the package is highlighted. The paper identifies the decisions which are necessary for development of CAD packages for design of hydraulic structures. Such interactive packages enhance the creativity of the designer and allows him complete freedom to explore the choices available to him.
