Abstract

The licensed water flow is an important design parameter for run-of-river power plants. Yet, the actual water flow fluctuates markedly depending on the season and weather, two factors which also affect the river's water level. A level and flow control system-like the one installed at the Laufenburg hydroelectric power plant-keeps the river's water level within the licensed range and optimizes the plant's power generation under the conditions prevailing at a given time. This and the automated start-up and shutdown of the turbine-generators enable the plant to be operated with virtually no personnel.
