Abstract

Water Resources in Narmada basin are intimately linked with the devetopment ot water resources for generation of hydro power. The key projects in Narmada basin for power generation are Bargi Project (Rani Awanti Bai Sagar Project), Narmada Sagar Project (Indira Sagar Project), Omkareshwar Project and Maheshwar Project. The Bargi Project has been successfully completed, while Narmada Sagar Project, Omkareshwar Project and Maheshwar Project are at various stages of construction. Environmental factors and social acceptability of projects are also present-day problems faced by all mega projects in the country. The Rhone Valley Scheme implemented by Campagnie National Ou Rhone and the small Hydro in Kaveri Basin are examples of development of Hydro Power in river basins. The author, therefore, suggests the development of untapped hydro power potential through a number of small hydro projects in the upper reaches of Narmada above Bargi project and four hydro barrages to be taken up in the mlddle reach of Narmada downstream of Bargi project and above FRL of Narmada Sagar Project.
