Abstract

Invariably after every major overhaul and long-term shut-down, turbogenerators are subject to dry-out to bring their winding insulation wihtin the permissible operating parameters. Londer dry-out periods of machine lead to:

(i) Uncertainty in power scheduling and loss of revenue and (ii) Unnecessary wastage of fuel.

Some of the typical reasons for non-accoumplishment of the desired dryness index of machine insulation have been identified. Remadial measures to overcome delays in achieving the desired dry-out parameters for stator winding insulation of 110 MW turbogenerators have also been suggested. It is hoped that the suggestions made in the paper will help reduce the wastage of time, fule and energy during the dry-out process.
