A detailed hydrometeorological study of Tungabhadra catchment upto the gauging site-27 having an area of about 14, 189 km2 has been made to determine the design storm rainfalls of different return periods and the probable maximum rainfall likely to be experienced by the catchment using rainfall data for the period 1901–85. Maximum 1, 2 and 3-day point rainfall for different return periods for some selected stations have also been calculated. It has been found that the catchment experienced maximum rainfall of 12.2 cm, 20.4 cm, 27.8 cm, 31.0 cm and 35.6 cm during 1,2,3,4 and 5 days respectively. Severe rainstorm of July 1923 which occurred in situ We1S moisture maximized to estimate probable maximum precipitation (PMP). The areal PMP estimc'ltes for 1, 2 and 3 days duration have been found to be 16 cm, 27 cm and 36 cm respectively. These design storm estimates will be useful in the planning and design of new water resources projects as well as in reexamining the spillways of existing water control devices on the river.
