Abstract

Current Indian practice of designing bridge or barrage waterway and foundation depth in case of al1uvial rivers, is based on the Lacey formulae. Valiclity of these formulae in application to rivers has been investigated and it is found that these are not applicable to all meandering rivers. Other available width and depth formulae are, therefore, considered and compared. Lacey Divergence formula is found superior yielding least uncertainty.

It is brought out that the standards and design criteria based on the assumption that realistic estimates of stable, natural width and depth or rivers are given by the Lacey formulae need to be reviewed.
