Between 1987 and 1995 the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) installed three hydro turbine/generator units ranging (rom approximately 150 kW to 1500 kW. These three projects were the result of TVA's goal to increase downstream flow when main hydro generating units are shut down, along with increasing the dissolved oxygen content of the release. Two of the small units utilized surplus nuclear pumps which were converted to generating units, and the third was a conventional turbine and induction generator. This paper discusses the selection process for providing minimum flow, details of engineering modifications required to convert the pumps to turbines, and discusses the aeration systems provided to raise the dissolved oxygen concentrations.
