Urban living in metropolitan cities of India is becoming difficult day by day. It is difficult because the growth of population in cities is at a faster pace than the development of the cities. To cope up with similar situation underground or sub-surface facilities have been created in developed countries. It has vast potential in India also. In addition to providing the additional space, the advantage of underground space lies in the natural protection it offers to whatever is placed underground. Development of underground space in cities means efficient use of available underground space to develop infrastructural facilities underneath the city in order to avoid surface congestion and environmental conflicts.
In the context of Smart City program of Government of India, it is high time now to include the use of underground space in the planning and development of cities.
