Kabrai Dam is over 50 years old earthen dam. The existing length and height of Kabrai Dam is approximately 2.2 km and 15 m respectively. It is proposed to increase the height to 29 m and the length to 4.8 km. Kolahni stream and Magria Nalah join the catchment near the dam site. In the older alignment extensions were joined by hillock on each side but due to mining of hills by locals on right extended side of the Dam, the hillock vanished. Therefore alignment was modified. Along the modified alignment 14 boreholes were drilled and the Foundation investigations were carried out for ascertaining the competency of foundation. In-situ tests such as Standard Penetration Tests and field Permeability Tests were carried out at regular intervals in all these 14 boreholes. Undisturbed soil samples were also collected. The collected soil samples were subjected to various laboratory tests such as grain size distribution, consistency limits, In-situ density and Triaxial shear test for ascertaining their index properties and the shear strength characteristics. In the present paper competency of the foundation have been analyzed in detail on the basis of laboratory and insitu foundation investigation on analysis competency of the foundation. The foundation of strata was found competent to along the modified alignment
