Coastal Embankment Rehabilitation Project, Bangladesh Water Development Board, Elite House (8th floor), 54-Motijheel Commercial Area, Dhaka, Bangladesh
Hydro morphologically dynamic, aggressive and resourceful coast of Bangladesh is at the continuous threat of erosion. Erosion causes coastal community to become vulnerable to livelihood and surcharge national development efforts. The foreshore infrastructure that pushed the nation's bay past its natural limit has raised confrontation between nature and intervention. Hard protection measures are effective but have substantial impacts. Softer solution is not ubiquitously compatible to coastal erosion. Location specific solutions to coastal erosions are designed for transition from resistance to resilience. Trials for evolving low-cost effective erosion protection measures have established its efficacies and been able to shrink the knowledge gap of the water professionals. Integration of vegetation with engineering interventions supported by community participation has been indicative to be an effective erosion control measures. The approach to softer solution to coastal erosions must be designed with a paradigm shift from monopoly of technology to a mix of multidisciplinary and participatory management. Further expansion of the research works will culminate in developing a environmentally sound and sustainable softer solution to coastal erosions.
