Abstract

A simple optimal Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) placement technique is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm eliminates creation of multiple matrices to include zero injection buses [ZIB] and conventional measurements which improves computational efficiency of the algorithm. The proposed algorithm solves optimal PMU placement problem for full system observability. The proposed algorithm formulation includes cost of PMUs and costs associated with substation upgradation for communication facilities etc. in objective function. To validate the performance of the proposed algorithm, it is tested on IEEE 14 bus system and compared with the generalized integer linear programming method available in literature.
