The present system of energy metering as well as billing in India uses NON AMI energy meter and electromechanical meters at few places. The mechanical meters do not store history data as well there is no provision of data downloading. The digital meters stores historical data but they do not communicate of its own being Non AMI. Therefore, it consumes more time and labor for accessing the Energy meters for meter reading and data downloading purposes. Many times this slow, costly and time consuming process delays the analysis and ultimately results in huge revenue loss to utility on account of pilferage and theft. The smart energy meter gives real time information at predefined period about electrical parameters, billing and at the same time they instantly flag the utility for any tampering attempt with the Energy Meters. Smart meters coupled with smart grid applications results accessing real time information and same can be used for big data analytics for demand side management, accurate load for casting, energy pilferage identification and many more useful applications.
