The paper describes the aspects of soil resistivity, footing resistance and earthing requirements of transmission towers to cater the need of fault preparedness in the event of short-circuit and lighting phenomenon. The soil resistivity being a variable parameter, if carried out with respect to transmission lines especially in new terrain and different region to determine the all-weather earthing requirement, though normally it is performed for substations, however, for transmission lines especially passing through unknown greenfield or brownfield terrain should also be a criteria that would provide better insight for providing earthing to the towers and make these safe during operational period of the transmission lines.
