The geoscientific and geotechnical studies of Indira Sager multipurpose project, on Narmada river for generation of 1000 MW of power and 1.23 lakh ha of command area development, were instrumental in optimizing the construction stage designs for acceptable foundation grades, treatment of shear/weak zones, rock cut slopes vis-à-vis stability and treatments/protections, tunnel support and lining etc. The geotechniques like mapping with micro-optic alidade, stereo photographic methods, stereographic plotting of joint data and kinematic admissibility checks, rock mass characterization, Slope Surface Rating (SSR), In-situ testing, Numerical Modelling/FEM analysis, bore hole camera studies, geophysical studies were effective tools for the geotechnical assessments/evaluations for the optimization of construction stage design reviews. The paper deals in detail the input parameters, the assessments and the effective results achieved. The design reviews made the project cost effective by about 18% of the estimation for the civil works.
