Indira Sagar Project, Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation Ltd., Bhopal
Indira Sagar project (8 x 125 MW) is a multipurpose project with arrangement for Power Generation, Irrigation, Pisciculture, Industrial Development, Supply of Water for Thermal Power Plant (2000 MW) and Tourism and has been constructed on river Narmada at village Punasa, East Nimar (MP). The project has been taken up for construction in 1992, with the work being subdivided in to various packages by Govt of MP i.e., dam, power house and canals. The power component of the project comprises of Head Race Channel, intake structure with pressure shaft, power house Building and Tail Race Channel, Switchyard etc. The water for the power component is being fed directly from the reservoir and the reservoir of 12.22 Billion m3 capacity and 913.48 sq km spread area by construction of 92 m (from deepest foundation level) high concrete gravity dam on the main river course has been created, which on filling shall be the largest in the country.
NHDC Ltd., a joint venture of NHPC and Govt. of MP was created for taking up the balance work of Indira Sagar project and Omkareshwar Project (8 x 65 MW) in August 2000 on ownership basis. The construction of Powerhouse complex has been completed ahead of schedule and this report deals in to various aspects of construction and evolution of project components from construction stage to the completion of the different power house components.
