Abstract

In the power house concrete plug of m 20 grade was placed in draft Tube Vent of Unit#6 to protect the power house from flooding of water from tail pool side. The volume of concrete placed in the three vents of draft tube plug was 447m3. The concrete plug was removed by using hydraulic splitters, Jack hammer alongwith RCC cutting torch. The work mentioned above has been executed in extremely difficult condition with heavy seepage of water and ventilation problem. RCC cutting torch alongwith hydraulic splitters combination were used for the breaking the concrete which was a unique experiment and the same helped us in fast removal of rich concrete. The technique used was non blasting technique as the power house was in operation and care had to be taken so that O&M of the power house was not affected.
