Abstract

Joga fort, a fine Mughal fort located on a rocky hillock oozing out of the Narmada river bed. The fort is constructed on a high altitude island made by two streams of the Narmada, on the north of village Joga. The main stream of Narmada flows on the north of the island and another little smaller stream, which bifurcates from the main stream just encircles the island and joins the main stream on the west. There is an extension of the fort on the north towards the main stream of the Narmada where a bastion-cum-well was constructed. The well within the bastion gets submerged during the high floods. Since the bastion cum well is an important and integral part of the fort which was originally used as a source of water, it was essential to preserve the same from the scouring effect of the river water which was bound to rise due to construction of Indira Sagar dam. It was decided to have a safeguard wall around the structure which was recommended by the technical team of Archeological Survey of India (ASI), Bhopal circle in the interest of this nationally protected monument. This paper deals with the challenges and difficulties faced during the construction of the safeguard wall.
