Abstract

Estimation of scour based on field data is quite important for design of hydraulic structures such as dams, spillways, barrages etc. However, most of the available field data in literature has got only three variables such as discharge intensity, total head and depth of scour. The actual size of bed material, running time of spillway etc. have not been reported and could not be taken in analysis in the field data. This is a major concern for the scientists and engineers. The researchers have applied empirical equations as well as soft computing techniques in predicting scour for spillways in the past under different circumstances. In general it was observed that the application of conventional empirical equations gives good results in scour predictions.

This paper assess the usefulness of some of the important empirical equations proposed by the different investigators under varying field situations to predict the depth of scour downstream of ski-jump bucket type spillways. It is concluded that estimation of depth of scour in ski jump type spillway was found to be nearly same based on the values of correlation coefficient and rmse values irrespective of type of empirical equation used.
