The present paper is a case study of replacement of an 30 year old, 1805 KW, 12 P, 6,6 kV vertical CWP motor at a 200 MW thermal power plant. The present paper deals with challenges faced during the development of the motor. Developing a tailor made product for the customer which sits on the existing foundation. Extensive use of Finite Element Analysis in predicting the performance and optimizing the design for pump thrust and dynamic behaviour. Use of newer materials for smaller and simpler design, Improved ventilation with improvement in the efficiency of the motor and a reduction in weight of the new motor. Development of new thrust and guide bearing assemblies for better vibratory performance, improved reliability, ease of maintenance and better ergonomics. The case study presents the development cycle for replacement of an outdated motor with a technologically advanced, energy efficient and optimised design
Replacement of outdated motor with ergonomically designed technologically advanced energy efficient motor
