Abstract

Expectations for quality power are great and are likely to remain so in future as well. Stability of the power system avoiding frequency excursions is essential for smooth operation and for reduction in various technical and commercial losses. Frequency excursions are not desirable as these have detrimental effects on efficiency and life of generating equipments. At times, these may turn out to be acutely hazardous leading to collapse of the whole system.

Persistent efforts have been made to explore the new possibilities to keep the grid frequency under check. Appropriate Hydro: Thermal mix and concept of energy storage can strengthen the system by instantly compensating for the generation/load imbalance and stabilizing the system. Proper power management and discipline adequately contributes towards accomplishing stability in the grid. Hydro and pumped storage schemes have vital role to play in maintaining a healthy power system.
