Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Systems can be installed on vacant rooftops of residential households without much hassle and no land requirement. However, till June 2020 only 5.9 GW of thesesystems have been installed against the target of 40 GW in India. The reason for slow growthneeds to be addressed so that the solar targets can be met. This paper is an attempt to review existing policy framework for rooftop solar systems and their shortcomings in addressing the residential consumer requirements. The study highlights business models and financing available for installing rooftop solar systems in India and based on expert interviews and questionnaire-based survey, the author presents recommendation for new business modelto help escalate deployment of rooftop system in India.
