Electricity is the prime mover for the growth of economy or welfare of nation and hence the Policies framed by Govt. of India performs a vital role. Electricity Act 2003 brought a paradigm move in the power sector of India. However, despite a decade of its enactment, the financial viability of distribution sector is lacking, and per capita-consumption is far below the world average. But we cannot deny the improvement that the Act has brought in terms of competition, trading and private sector participation in generation and transmission sector. This paper summarizes the status of the Electricity Act based on Core Indicators to evaluate the impact of the Act and-identified improvement areas which would help us to decide the future course of action. This paper also highlights-and illustrate impact on power sector due to recent Draft Electricity Amendment Bill 2020 introduced by Ministry of Power, Govt. of India.
