Abstract

Tehri dam project is one of the prestigious mega hydroelectric projects of the nation which shall harness the vast hydro potential of mythical river Bhagirathi. The 1st stage of the project involved construction of a 260.5 m high earth & rock fill dam across the river Bhagirathi at Tehri, an underground power house (1000 MW), a spillway system etc. Number of alternatives with the variation in type, location, number and height of structures have been considered before the finalization of the present scheme. A single dam with low height, two dams one each on Bhagirathi & Bhilangana river, and possibility of run-of-the river scheme etc. were considered. The cost & benefits from these schemes were studied in detail. Finally, on the basis of techno-economic considerations, it was decided that the present scheme is the best scheme for harnessing the benefits from water of Bhagirathi and Bhilangana at Tehri.
