A 260.5 m high rock-fill dam has been constructed across river Bhagirathi on downstream of the confluence with the river Bhilangana. The gross storage at FRL 830 m, in the two long reservoir limbs along Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers, is estimated as 3540 MCM. The region consists of a rugged mountainous terrain with steep slopes of varying types of rock formations. Numerous superficial small slides as well as deep slides have been reported to have occurred in the past in the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana Valley. The small-scale slides could result in silting of the reservoir and also create deforestation posing a threat to the ecology of the region. Therefore, the various laboratory & field investigations were got done to identify the weak & unstable hill slopes which otherwise may pose a threat to the dam or the ecological balance of the region.
