Abstract

The spillways are virtually safety valves for any storage dams and are conventionally used to pass the inflows when storage capacity of the reservoir is exhausted or storage is no more required above a particular level. Tehri dam spillways have been designed for a probable maximum flood of 15540 cumecs with corresponding routed flood of 13040 cumecs and as soon as the reservoir storage shall attain normal reservoir level mark, the extra inflow shall be passed through the spillways. Design of all the spillways has been optimized and tested on physical models built on the similarity principles. Almost all the hydraulic model studies have been carried out at Irrigation Research Institute, Roorkee.
