Abstract

The formation of unburnt carbon in pulverized coal based boiler furnace is undesirable as it leads to not only huge wastage of fuel but associated with revenue loss also, which in turn increase the unit generation cost.

The formation of unburnt carbon depends on many factors viz., nature of fuel (reactivity): operational parameters (O2 level, residence time of coal particles inside the furnace, turbulence, furnace temperature profile, etc.) mill performance (coal fineness). In the present paper the high unburnt carbon formation of some Indian pulverized coal power based stations was studied to find out the causes of unburnt carbon formation. The possible remedial measures and various tips were also suggested for improvement. The case studies of all the stations are given separately.
