India is traversing its energy transition journey and thus targets to have 50% of installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 & achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2070. Accordingly, India is committed to accommodate 500 Gigawatt of non-fossil-based generation by 2030. As India is striving towards a sustainable and low carbon energy future, Hydro Power has a big role to play for enabling this renewable integration/ transition. Hydropower has provided significant clean electricity in India for past 100 years and its extreme flexibility is a strong asset for Indian Power System, which is vital for renewable integration. Hydro Power has capability to offset the intermittency/ variability issues with renewable and also, address the dynamic demand requirements of the grid. This paper focuses on role of hydro in integration of variable renewable resources along with case studies relating same.
