Abstract

The present study focused on the assessment of the quality of surface water in West Godavari district, India as per Indian standards. Water samples were collected from selected locations in across the West Godavari district. The collected samples were analyzed for physiochemical and biological characteristics of water in order to identify the water quality and to propose remedial measures to provide safe water for drinking and domestic purposes. Quality of the surface water is deteriorating due to pollution, industrial and other activities and the situation was much worse in areas closer to factories, industries, power plants, etc. as they dump chemicals into the nearby water bodies, for instance, high TDS and chemical contents in the water samples. In addition, laboratory analysis of the water quality parameters revealed the variation in the surface water over the water bodies. The study results will help to identify the status of overall water quality of the sampled locations which play a vital role in providing resilient water management plans over the study region to provide safe and quality water to domestic, industrial and agricultural purposes.
