Abstract

Irrigation and Agriculture are two interconnected wheels of economy. Irrigated Agriculture brings about economic growth by sustaining the Agricultural Productivity, creating livelihood and employment generation. In the light of increasing demand for irrigation in the state of Assam and to cover the non irrigated area as well as to continue the supplies for the irrigated command area, it becomes imperative to look for holistic and people centric Innovative approaches for irrigation management. Irrigation water is too fundamental and serious issue to be left to one institution alone needing combined initiatives and cooperation of all those concerned and serious in socio economic development. Irrigation water can be assured at every crop field provided we set our mind and put concerted efforts to address it. This paper highlights the Irrigation scenario in Assam with an emphasis on the Innovative Irrigation Practices which are very much need of the hour for sustenance of Agricultural Productivity in the State. An attempt has been made to present case study of an Irrigation Scheme in Assam. The innovation in Irrigation Sector can cause Social transformation by bringing in the development of other interlinked sectors to sustain the Socio-Economic growth. The study advocates for developing a Comprehensive Strategic Action Plan for optimal utilization of the resources by addressing the problems and challenges associated with the Irrigation Sector.
