This article discusses India’s requirements for bio-energy production and associated considerations for scaling up the bio-energy ecosystem.
As the world’s third largest energy consumer, India has long been dependent on oil imports to meet its growing energy needs leading to energy security challenges and significant outflow of foreign currency. Thus, India’s transition to a global powerhouse and sustainable nation hinges on the development of a robust green power ecosystem.
Bio-energy offers multiple benefits such as lower particulate matter and sulphur emissions (vs. Thermal power), reduction of import dependence on fossil fuels (especially Natural Gas and Crude Oil) as well as potential to serve as a supplementary income stream for Indian farmers as it leverages crop residues and organic wastes.
This article explores the key challenges and potential solutions to accelerate the development of India’s Bio-energy ecosystem. Further, as the country’s largest pure-play green financier -IREDA’s pivotal role in catalyzing this transformation is also discussed.
