Earthing system is most vital element of any substation. It is important for safety of equipment and person. Once installed, it is passive and becomes active during flow of fault current. It has been observed that maintenance of this system is often neglected which leads to catastrophe at later date. Unsafe earthing system is responsible for several outages, equipment failure and accidents to humans & animals. This paper focuses on key aspects of maintenance of earthing system in substations. It also emphasizes on some important safety issues, which may be adopted to avoid any accidents.
