Abstract

Floods are major natural disasters can cause significant damage to human life and property. Flood-prone areas are particularly vulnerable, and effective management of these areas requires accurate predictions of flood behaviour. Onedimensional modeling of flood-prone areas using HEC-RAS is a powerful tool for predicting the behavior of rivers and channels during a range of flow conditions. The objective of the present work is to provide an overview of one-dimensional modeling process using HEC-RAS and applies it to the case study of Kunavaram, a flood-prone area located in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India. The study includes the creation of a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the study area, defining the river Godavari geometry, specifying the boundary conditions, and running the simulation. The simulation results are analyzed to identify areas at risk of flooding, assess the impact of potential flood mitigation measures, and develop strategies to reduce the risk of flooding in the study area.
