Abstract

India's pursuit of energy self-reliance and net-zero emissions by 2070 has positioned green hydrogen as a cornerstone of its decarbonization strategy. It has emerged as a strategic lever in India's ambition to achieve energy self-sufficiency and decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors. With its potential to replace fossil fuels in steel, fertilizers, refining, and transport, GH2 can power India's journey toward a $10 trillion green economy. This article explores India's Green Hydrogen landscape through the lens of recent market developments, economic viability, pilot projects, and policy initiatives such as the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).

Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) is already spearheading this transition by financing India's green hydrogen projects right from the early stages of their emergence. Demonstrating its strong commitment to India's green hydrogen transition, IREDA has taken a proactive role in advancing India's green hydrogen ecosystem by extending significant financial support and establishing a growing portfolio of funded projects in the sector. With coordinated efforts across public and private sectors, regulatory support from government and with institutions like IREDA playing a pivotal role, India is well positioned to emerge as a global hub for low-cost, scalable, and export-ready green hydrogen production.
