Abstract

Protection systems are essential for safeguarding power system assets and ensuring operational stability. However, improper operations due to incorrect relay settings, coordination issues, or system changes can lead to unnecessary tripping, generation loss, and reliability concerns. This paper presents select case studies from NHPC hydro power stations where protection improper operations were thoroughly analysed. The root causes—including relay setting errors and coordination lapses – were identified, and corrective actions were implemented to restore reliable operation.

The findings highlight the importance of periodic relay setting reviews and post-event analysis to enhance protection system performance.
