Abstract

Earthing (grounding) is to make an electric connection between a conductive part and a local earth. Earthing is a fundamental concept in electrical installations, providing a path for fault currents and helping ensure electrical safety. It prevents electric shock hazards, limits overvoltages, and ensures the proper operation of protective devices. There are several earthing systems in use worldwide, primarily classified as TN (Terre-Neutral), TT (Terre-Terre), and IT (Isolated Terre). This article discusses the five main earthing configurations: TN-S, TN-C, TN-C-S, TT, and IT, their structures, advantages, disadvantages, and associated safety protection systems.
