Abstract

Transformers in its present form, grown and matured over 126 years, has given rise explosive growth to the utilization of energy. These increasing utilization lead to compromise in operating conditions viz. voltage profile, loading, and flow of harmonic. These adverse operating conditions while sacrifice life of transformers, variation of losses in transformers from nominal values affect techno-economic evaluation. Total owning cost of transformers is based on estimated life of transformer which is greatly dependent on rate of failure. This paper highlights the operational adversities that needs to be taken care of in absence of which all techno-economics and technological innovations in transformers would remain unexploited.
