Abstract

The transition toward a net-zero global energy system hinges on the scalable deployment of green hydrogen as a foundational energy vector to decarbonize hard-to-abate industrial and mobility sectors. With global hydrogen demand projected to surge from approximately 90 Million Metric Tons (MMT) today to potentially over 600 MMT by 2050, the international community is rapidly mobilizing massive capital and stringent policy frameworks to bridge the prohibitive Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) gap between fossil-derived and renewable production methods.

This paper provides a comprehensive techno-economic assessment of the entire global green hydrogen value chain. It critically evaluates upstream thermodynamic pathways (such as advanced electrolysis), midstream logistical bottlenecks (including cryogenic liquefaction and chemical carriers like ammonia), diverging international regulatory architectures, and shifting market economics.

Furthermore, the paper delivers an in-depth examination of India’s strategic market ascent under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). By harmonizing “technology-push” manufacturing subsidies with bold “demand-pull” aggregation tenders, the analysis highlights India’s highly effective transition from nascent policy formulation to gigawattscale project execution, ultimately positioning the nation as a vanguard in the rapidly expanding global clean molecule export market.
