This paper examines the intricate legislative, policy and institutional frameworks governing renewable energy in India and globally. By synthesizing foundational domestic energy laws, assessing international climate treaties and providing an updated statistical analysis up to the year 2026, this paper seeks to evaluate the efficacy of current governance structures. Furthermore, it analyzes the geopolitical realities and institutional trilemmas that dictate energy transitions. The paper highlights critical research gaps–specifically the absence of a dedicated Renewable Energy Act in India and the reliance on “soft law” in the international arena–and concludes by exploring futuristic research frontiers like Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) to overcome existing terrestrial limitations.
