Abstract

Coir geotextiles are widely used all over the world for erosion control purpose taking into advantage of its biodegradability nature as well as its ecofriendliness. In this study coir geotextiles made of different weaving pattern and also coir yarns made of different spinning methods were utilized to study their efficacy in preventing erosion. The ultimate aim is to develop a uniform standard on coir geotextiles for erosion control as part of the coir geotextiles development programme of Govt. of Kerala. All the studies were conducted as part of the watershed management projects along Western Ghats in Kerala and proved that coir geotextiles of any weaving pattern as well as coir yarns made of any spinning methods are equally good for erosion control.
