The demand for uninterrupted quality power supply is increasing day-by-day all over the world. Efficient power management is the need of hour. This paper describes power system structure, control areas of a power grid, functions of a control center, components of a power control center, and stages involved in establishing a Power control center. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Energy Management System (EMS) are the major functions of any Power control center. Communication is the backbone of any SCADA system.
This paper also highlights the importance and therefore the role of communication system in the functioning of power control center.
