Abstract

Presence of Scaling, Bio-fouling and corrosion products in the cooling waters in open re-circulating systems result in the performance reduction of cooling towers and heat exchangers. Analytical and electrochemical studies of the deposits accumulated on the condensers & heat exchangers had been carried out at R&D Laboratory for various power plants of NTPC. Based on these studies, off-line and on-line methodology for removal of the contaminants was developed by R&D to improve the efficiency.

Present paper deals with the identification of the deposits & contaminations accumulated on the condensers & heat exchangers and auxiliary systems along with development of suitable chemical cleaning & treatment methods for removal of the same during the off-line and on-line operations.
