Induction motor is a critical component in many power plants & industrial processes and is frequently integrated in commercially available equipment. Safety, reliability, efficiency and performance are some of the major concerns of induction motor applications. Due to high reliability requirements, and cost of breakdown, the issue of condition monitoring of induction motors and diagnosis is of great importance. For these reasons, there has been a continually increasing interest and investigations into the fault detection and diagnosis of induction motors. Failures among motors indicate that 10% of the induction motor failures are rotor related and most of them are having cage faults. About 41% of failures are bearing related and 37% of failures are related to stator faults.
Hence there is a need for reliable on-line monitoring technique for detection of such rotor faults without dismantling of motor. This paper describes the utility of online monitoring technique for detection of various faults through motor current signature anlaysis, that can be applied to existing motors without dismantling or shut down. Different types of fault which can be analysed are Rotor Faults, Stator faults, Eccentricity faults and Bearing faults.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a condition monitoring tool for motor current signature analysis and its key features for detection of internals faults within the motor. This paper will also present various industrial case histories of reliable fault detection by this technique. This technique can be applied for diagnosis of Internal faults of Motors and Generators at a nuclear power station, process plants and thermal power stations.
