Retailing in India is the largest private sector and second to agriculture in employment. India has highest density of retail outlets over 12 million. The retail sector contributes about 10–11% to Indian GDP. However, an important aspect of the current economic scenario in India is the emergence of organized retail. there has been a considerable growth in organized retailing business in recent years and it has been a considerable growth in organised retailing business in recent years and it is posted for much faster growth in the future. Major industrial houses have entered in this area and have announced very ambitious future expansion plans. Transnational corporations are also seeking to come to India and set up retail chains in collaboration with big Indian companies. The paper aims to highlight the present scenario of retail in India. further, efforts have been made to analyse growth sector-wise organised retail market in India and suggest policy implications to accelerate the growth in Indian retail market.
