Abstract

A number of 6950 households are located in rural Tripura, where electric connection could not extended to conventional power supply system. The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency is implementing the “Remote Village Electrification Programmed” (RVEP) to electrify such households by installing solar photovoltaic (PV) Home Lighting System (HLS) in different parts of the state. A study was conducted for this paper on basis of physical observation. The operationalization of the system is different in different districts. In West Tripura district a total 2295 Home Lighting System (HLS) have been installed, 2273 in Dhalai district, 1809 in South Tripura district and 573 in North Tripura district. But despite such electrification Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency is aiming to include more households under Home lighting system scheme. However on physical observation it appeared that the renewable energy is being promoted due to the very fact and that is inability to extend electric wires to rural households for inappropriateness of location and theft of electricity through hook lines and other equipments. Renewable energy in Tripura thus being considered theft-free and user-friendly.
