Abstract

Human Resources Management is considered to be the most important part of management. Human Resource Management has many functions like recruitment, selection, training and development, performance appraisal and career development. Performance Appraisal system is one of the most important functions of Human Resources Management which will facilitate all other functions of Human Resources Management. Performance management refers to the more general set of activities carried out by the organization to change (improve) employees’ performance. It is a detailed description about the employee's strengths and weaknesses. Performance appraisal helps to achieve the organizational goals by putting their best efforts. Performance appraisal used for promotions, employment opportunity considerations, transfer and increase the salary. The performance appraisal system is the ladder for development. The present study deals with Performance Appraisal System at Arvind Motors, Mangalore. The study is relevant for the reasons that it will help the company to know about the effectiveness of existing performance appraisal system, strengths and weaknesses of present system of performance appraisal and it will also help the company to develop the strategies for making the system more effective. The main purpose of the study is to measure the effectiveness of Performance Appraisal System at Arvind Motors, Mangalore.This study is conducted to analyze the effectiveness of Performance Appraisal System at Arvind Motors Pvt. Ltd. Mangalore. The study period is 1/01/2013 to 31/01/2013. The study covers all types of employees of Arvind Motors Pvt. Ltd. Mangalore. Since the study is being conducted at Arvind Motors Pvt. Ltd., Mangalore, the scope of the study is limited to only one business unit. A comprehensive and structured questionnaire was used to collect the primary data and information from the sample. However, some secondary sources, such as books and periodicals were consulted for the purpose of understanding the basic concepts of Performance Appraisal. Sample size of the study is 100 employees of Arvind Motors, Mangalore and simple random sampling technique had been used.
